Fortnite officially launches on Nintendo Switch 2 today, June 5, bringing a host of visual upgrades and control enhancements. But the real surprise? A direct reference to Kirby in Epic Games’ blog post, which has reignited hopes for long-awaited Nintendo character collaborations in Fortnite.
Fortnite on Switch 2: A Massive Upgrade
Fortnite has been rebuilt to take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2’s improved hardware, running at a smooth 60 FPS with upgraded visuals and enhanced controls. Here are the key features players can expect:
Resolution: 2176×1224 docked, 1600×900 undocked
Enhanced graphics: High-quality textures, shadows, water rendering, and improved clothing physics
Extended view distance: See more across the battlefield
Replay system: Relive your best matches
GameChat support: Stream with up to 3 friends
Another notable addition is mouse-like aiming using Joy-Con 2. Players can enable this option through the game’s settings, choosing to use either the left, right, or both Joy-Cons to aim and navigate. The feature rolls out with patch 36.00 on June 7, offering an entirely new way to play on console.
A Wishing Star and a Kirby Tease
Epic Games is giving Switch 2 players an exclusive emote—the Wishing Star Emote—if they log in before March 31, 2026. The reward is described with the line:
“Grab a shooting star, make a wish, and throw it back! You can’t go on an air ride with it, but it’s the next best thing.”
That reference to “Air Ride” is no accident—it’s a nod to Kirby Air Ride, a beloved Nintendo GameCube title. While Kirby Air Riders isn’t a Switch 2 launch game, it's slated for release in 2025.
Nintendo has historically kept its characters exclusive to its own titles. However, Epic’s reference to Kirby—and the growing relationship between Nintendo and Fortnite—could be a major turning point.
If Kirby does appear, other icons like Mario, Link, Samus, or Fox McCloud could follow. With crossovers already ranging from Star Wars to Marvel, a Nintendo lineup would be a monumental win for Fortnite’s expanding metaverse.
