Red Dead Redemption 2 Reportedly Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 Alongside Next-Gen Upgrades

Red Dead Redemption 2

One of the most critically acclaimed games of the last decade may soon be galloping onto Nintendo’s upcoming console. According to new reports, Red Dead Redemption 2 is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2, with next-gen upgrade patches also in the works for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

A Wild West Revival on New Hardware?

The report first surfaced via Gamereactor, which claims to have heard from sources close to Rockstar Games that the beloved western adventure is being prepped for Nintendo’s next-generation platform. Spanish outlet Nintendúo independently corroborated the claim, citing different insider sources.

What’s more, both publications report that Rockstar isn’t just focusing on Nintendo’s hardware. A next-gen upgrade patch is reportedly in development, designed to enhance Red Dead Redemption 2’s visuals and performance on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles — a long-requested update by fans.

A Missing Piece from Nintendo's Direct

These reports follow a wave of Nintendo Switch 2 leaks that preceded the system’s official unveiling. Games like Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII, and Elden Ring were confirmed during Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct in April, yet Red Dead Redemption 2 was noticeably absent — despite earlier speculation.

The potential arrival of the game on Nintendo’s new platform would mark a major step forward in Rockstar and Nintendo’s historically limited relationship. If confirmed, this could signal the beginning of broader collaboration between the two gaming giants.

During an investor call, Take-Two also mentioned plans to release several games on the Nintendo Switch 2, potentially including Red Dead Redemption 2.

A Game Worth Revisiting

First released in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 quickly earned universal acclaim for its narrative depth, open-world immersion, and technical achievements. It has since sold over 74 million copies worldwide, making it Rockstar’s second best-selling game behind Grand Theft Auto V.

For existing players on PlayStation 5, the prospect of a next-gen patch is especially compelling. Currently, the game runs at 4K/30FPS via backward compatibility, with no enhancements for modern hardware. A native update could unlock improved textures, faster loading times, and higher frame rates — features long demanded by the community.

No Official Confirmation — Yet

While these reports are promising, neither Nintendo nor Rockstar Games has publicly confirmed Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Switch 2 or announced a next-gen patch for consoles.
