In one of the more surprising developments of the year, Forza Horizon 5—an Xbox-published title—has reportedly become the best-selling new game on PlayStation 5 in 2025, according to data from analytics firm Alinea Insight.
The game, which first launched back in 2021 for Xbox consoles and PC, was ported to the PS5 on April 29, 2025. In less than three months, it has reportedly sold over 3 million copies on Sony’s platform.
This milestone, if accurate, makes Forza Horizon 5 the current leader in PS5 game sales for the year so far, overtaking big-name titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Alinea’s report tracks sales from January 1 to July 21, 2025, and places Forza just ahead of Monster Hunter Wilds, which sits at 2.9 million PS5 copies sold.
What’s even more impressive is the speed at which Forza Horizon 5 climbed the charts. Within just 25 days of launch, the game sold 2 million copies on PS5—a pace that outperformed 2024’s Game of the Year Astro Bot, and even Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2, which reached one million in the same time frame.
A recent 25% price drop, bringing the game to $45, reportedly played a key role in pushing it past the three million mark. While PlayStation exclusives usually dominate their own platform, the success of Forza demonstrates how Xbox's expanding multiplatform strategy is starting to pay off.
As per firm, the combined revenue from the PS5 and Steam versions of Forza Horizon 5 is now estimated to be around $400 million.
Forza Horizon 5 has also performed strongly outside the console space. The Steam version alone has sold 6.5 million copies, while more than 45.5 million players have accessed the game via Xbox consoles and Game Pass.
PS5 Sales Rankings So Far in 2025
Alongside Forza Horizon 5, the other top-performing new PS5 games this year (based on Alinea’s estimates) include:
Monster Hunter Wilds – 2.9 million copies on PS5
Assassin’s Creed Shadows – 2 million copies
Elden Ring: Nightreign – 1.4 million copies
Expedition 33 – 1.4 million copies
Of these, Monster Hunter Wilds is worth noting for another reason—it has reportedly generated more revenue than Forza, despite slightly lower sales figures. This is largely due to its higher $70 price point, compared to Forza’s $60 base (and lower sale prices).
Meanwhile, Expedition 33, a new JRPG-style IP from Sandfall Interactive, has proven to be a breakout hit. Its strong PS5 numbers are further boosted by 2.3 million Steam sales, showcasing that players are still hungry for classic turn-based RPGs.
