Microsoft Brings Gears of War: Reloaded to PlayStation for the First Time

Gears of War: Reloaded

Microsoft has announced Gears of War: Reloaded, a completely remastered version of their popular 2006 shooter coming to PlayStation 5, along with Xbox Series X|S and PC.

This marks the first time the iconic franchise will be playable on PlayStation consoles.

The remastered game will launch on August 26, 2025, and will cost $39.99 across all platforms.

For Xbox users who already own the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the upgrade to Reloaded will be free.

"It's about the stories we've told, the friendships we've built, and the unforgettable moments we've shared together," said Mike Crump, The Coalition studio head. "With Gears of War: Reloaded, we're opening that door to more players than ever."

The development of this remaster is being handled by The Coalition, with support from partner studios Sumo Interactive and Disbelief.

As the franchise approaches its 20th anniversary in 2026, this release aims to introduce the classic shooter to a new generation of players while providing longtime fans with the definitive version of the original game.

Gears of War: Reloaded isn't just a simple port. The game has been rebuilt "from the ground up" with significant technical improvements to take advantage of modern gaming hardware. Players can expect crystal-clear 4K resolution on supported devices and smooth performance with 60 frames per second (FPS) in the campaign mode. The multiplayer portion goes even further by supporting up to 120 FPS for ultra-responsive gameplay.

Other technical enhancements include:

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) for more vivid colors

  • Dolby Vision and 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos sound support

  • 3D spatial audio

  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for smoother visuals

  • Completely remastered 4K textures

The developers have also improved visual effects, shadows, and reflections while implementing better anti-aliasing for cleaner image quality. Campaign gameplay will now feature zero loading screens for an uninterrupted experience.

One of the most notable aspects of this release is Microsoft's continued expansion into multiplatform publishing. This follows their recently released Xbox exclusives like Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle onto PlayStation earlier this year.

The remaster will support full cross-play functionality, allowing friends to team up online regardless of which system they own. While a Microsoft account isn't required to play the game, signing in with one will unlock cross-progression features that let players carry their campaign and multiplayer progress across different devices.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers won't be left out either. Gears of War: Reloaded will be included in both Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on day one.

The complete package includes all post-launch downloadable content from the original game at no additional cost. This means players get access to the bonus campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics that can be unlocked through gameplay progression.

For cooperative gameplay enthusiasts, the campaign supports two-player co-op, while the versus multiplayer mode allows up to 8 players to compete online.

Looking further ahead, The Coalition has confirmed they're continuing development on Gears of War: E-Day, the next mainline entry in the franchise.

Players interested in the game can already wishlist it on their platform of choice, with the game being available for pre-order on Xbox Series X|S, PC (via both the Xbox app and Steam), and PlayStation 5.
