God of War: Sons of Sparta Shadow Drops on PS5: Price, Platforms, Gameplay

Sony has officially announced God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new 2D action platformer that takes players back to Kratos' early years as a Spartan warrior.
The game was revealed during the recent State of Play presentation and is available to play immediately on PlayStation 5.
This marks the first time the God of War franchise ventures into 2D platforming territory. According to the announcement, Sons of Sparta explores Kratos during his brutal training in the Agoge, following a young version of the Ghost of Sparta as he trains alongside his brother Deimos. The story dives deep into the harsh lessons and experiences that would eventually shape him into the warrior fans know today.
The development comes from Mega Cat Studios, an indie retro game developer known for their passion projects. However, the story itself has been crafted by Santa Monica Studio, the team behind the critically acclaimed God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, to ensure the narrative stays true to the franchise's rich lore.
One of the most exciting aspects of the announcement is the return of TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos. Carson is lending his voice to the adult version of Kratos for the first time in over a decade, serving as the narrator for Sons of Sparta.
The gameplay showcases Kratos wielding his spear and shield in fast-paced 2D combat that stays true to the series' signature brutal fighting style. Players can also utilize divine relics called the Gifts of Olympus throughout their journey. Classic enemies have been reimagined in 2D form, and players will encounter new creatures inspired by Greek mythology.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is being marketed as a 2.5D Metroidvania-style game, suggesting exploration and interconnected level design beyond simple linear progression.
The shadow drop announcement came as a complete surprise, especially since it followed the reveal of an upcoming God of War Trilogy Remake. That remake project is still in its early stages of development.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is available exclusively on PlayStation 5 through the PlayStation Store. The game comes in two versions:
Standard Edition: $29.99 (USD) or £24.99 (UK)
Digital Deluxe Edition: $39.99 (USD) or £32.99 (UK)
The Digital Deluxe Edition includes several bonuses such as a digital artbook, digital soundtrack, Arrow of Virtue spear attachment, Rusty Scrap enhance material, Unstable Gemstone belt attachment, Blood Orbs in-game currency, and PlayStation Network avatars.
Currently, the game is only available as a digital purchase with no physical disc version announced.
There's also no confirmation about potential ports to PC, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch at this time.
