More than three years after its release, Gran Turismo 7 is still attracting players, with series producer Kazunori Yamauchi revealing that the game now boasts over two million monthly active users, and the number keeps growing.
The revelation came during the Gran Turismo World Series 2025 World Finals in Fukuoka, Japan, where Yamauchi spoke in a round-table interview with select media outlets (via GTPlanet).
His comments arrive at a high point for the franchise, which recently celebrated surpassing 100 million copies sold worldwide. For a series that has been around for nearly three decades, this milestone underscores its enduring appeal.
Yamauchi described the situation as “a very unique” one, noting that Gran Turismo 7 is defying the typical lifecycle of most games. “Gran Turismo 7 has been released for several years, but still, the active users are currently over 2 million people, and the new users are increasing,” he explained.
“The status that Gran Turismo 7 is in now is probably the best of any Gran Turismo titles that we’ve had in the past. We’ve never experienced this phenomenon before, and neither has PlayStation.”
This growth becomes even more remarkable considering it's happening organically, without relying on aggressive price cuts that publishers typically use to breathe new life into aging titles. Yamauchi credits this longevity to Polyphony Digital's evolved approach to community engagement and long-term post-launch support. The recent Power Pack DLC and Spec III update have also been key in keeping the player base excited and engaged.
The franchise’s esports presence is also expanding. Polyphony Digital representatives revealed that Gran Turismo World Series events are now reaching around 8 million viewers per broadcast.
Released on March 4, 2022, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Gran Turismo 7 has consistently earned praise for its visuals, immersive handling, and DualSense integration. It holds a Metacritic score of 87 on PS5 and 82 on PS4, and won Best Sports/Racing Game at The Game Awards 2022 and D.I.C.E. 2023. Its VR mode, added later via a free update, has been hailed as one of the best console racing experiences available.
