GTA 6 Development Budget Could Exceed $3 Billion, UK Filings Suggest

Rockstar Games may have spent over $3 billion developing GTA 6, based on publicly available corporate documents filed with the UK government.

A Reddit user by the name of Due-Vanilla-8294 dug into the financial filings of Rockstar Games UK Limited, the legal entity for Rockstar North, and compiled salary and wage expenses from 2019 to 2025.

The numbers are staggering. According to those documents, the total spend on employee salaries at Rockstar North alone comes out to roughly £1.6 billion, which converts to around $2.1 billion in USD.

Here is the year-by-year breakdown from the filings:

  • March 2019 to March 2020: $253 million

  • March 2020 to March 2021: $296 million

  • March 2021 to March 2022: $459 million

  • March 2022 to March 2023: $419 million

  • March 2023 to March 2024: $418 million

  • March 2024 to March 2025: $374 million

And that is just one studio. Rockstar operates several other studios globally, including Rockstar San Diego, Rockstar India, Rockstar Lincoln, Rockstar Leeds, and Rockstar New England, all of which have contributed to the game's development.

Factor in their costs, and the total budget likely pushes past or approaches the $3 billion mark.

It is worth noting that these are not leaks or rumors. These are legally required corporate filings. The figures are real. What they do not confirm directly is how much of that spending was purely for GTA 6 versus maintaining GTA Online or covering general studio overhead. That said, a significant portion of it almost certainly went into GTA 6.

To put that in perspective, GTA V cost around $265 million to develop and market back in 2013, and that was considered one of the most expensive games ever at the time. GTA 6 at $3 billion would be more than 11 times that figure.

Even outside of gaming, the number is wild. The first season of Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power reportedly cost $1 billion. GTA 6 triples that.

KiwiTalkz, known for interviewing former Rockstar developers and having sources inside the company, responded to the findings on X and suggested the $3 billion figure is in the right ballpark.

"The budget for GTA 6 looks like it will be 3 billion dollars once its all said and done. I have been saying for ages that it will take other developers 15-20 years to match what Rockstar is doing with GTA 6, I wasn't exaggerating, some of the stuff they have planned is crazy ambitious. Come November you will see where all the money went."

The budget also sheds light on the game's development timeline and repeated delays. When you have invested this much into a single product, launching something unpolished simply is not an option. The second delay, which pushed the release from May to November 2026, reportedly added another $200 to $300 million in costs.

As per analyst projections by DFC Intelligence, GTA 6 is expected to generate $3.2 billion in its first year alone. If the development cost is indeed around the same figure, Rockstar essentially needs to break even within year one before factoring in marketing, distribution, and platform fees.

GTA 6 is currently set to launch on November 19, 2026.
