Rockstar Games is reportedly working on adding age verification checks to GTA Online, aiming to restrict certain features for underage players.

The update comes in the wake of tighter digital safety laws, especially in the UK, where the Online Safety Act 2023 (OSA) now makes it mandatory for platforms to verify users’ ages before they can access adult content. While this started as a push for safer browsing, it’s now rippling into the gaming world — and Rockstar seems to be the latest studio getting ready to follow suit.

The news first surfaced thanks to Tez2, a trusted GTA leaker, who responded to a joke about age checks not stopping players from entering the in-game strip club, Vanilla Unicorn. He clarified that, in fact, Rockstar is preparing to roll out age verification.

“You may need to verify your age to access GTA Online, or certain features like phone messages, text chat, Snapmatic may be restricted until you verify your age,” Tez2 said.

He even shared a snippet from the game’s files that included messages warning players they’d be blocked from using features if they didn’t verify their age.

While he didn’t confirm exactly which regions would be affected first, he did say the UK will definitely be the first in line — which makes sense considering the legal pressure from the OSA.

Rockstar hasn’t officially commented on the matter yet, so nothing is 100% confirmed. But given how other platforms have been handling similar regulations, this leak feels pretty likely to turn into reality. Microsoft’s Xbox, for example, has already introduced age checks for UK users flagged as 18+, restricting access to social tools like messaging, voice chat, and even Twitch integration if they don't verify their age.

Other platforms like Discord, Roblox, and Nexus Mods have also jumped on board with their own verification systems to stay compliant with the new law. So if Rockstar follows through, it would be part of a growing trend in the industry.

And with GTA 6 on the horizon, it’s safe to assume that if age checks are coming to GTA Online, they’ll definitely carry over to GTA 6 as well.
