Helldivers 2 is set to arrive on Xbox Series X and S on August 26, 2025, marking a major shift in Sony’s approach to platform exclusivity.
Originally released on PC and PlayStation 5 in February 2024, the popular co-op third-person shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios is now expanding to Microsoft’s ecosystem—with full crossplay support across all platforms.
Pre-orders for the Xbox version are already live on the Xbox Store, priced at £34.99/ $39.99 [size 35GB].
This isn’t just another port—it’s the first time a game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment is making its way to Xbox platforms. That’s a significant moment in gaming history, especially considering the long-standing rivalry between Sony and Microsoft. While MLB The Show is developed by a Sony studio, it’s technically published by Major League Baseball on Xbox. Helldivers 2, however, is a different story entirely, setting a precedent for future cross-platform possibilities.
Game Director Mikael Eriksson shared his excitement in a statement on Xbox Wire. “We know gamers have been asking for this for some time, and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game,” Eriksson said. “The more players we have, the more stories we can tell. The fight for Super Earth has only just begun.”
The game’s arrival on Xbox also coincides with Microsoft’s release of Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5 on the same day.
Helldivers 2 has already sold over 12 million copies within its first 12 weeks, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title to date. The live-service shooter has maintained a healthy player base since launch, especially on Steam, and the addition of Xbox players is expected to inject new life into the already thriving community.
Before this, Helldivers 2 had been in the headlines for lifting geographical restrictions that previously blocked access in countries like the Bahamas and Burkina Faso. And with Tencent recently acquiring a 15% stake in Arrowhead Games for roughly $80 million, the studio seems poised for long-term growth and continued updates to the game.
Xbox players jumping in this August will have missed a few key events—like the Illuminate faction invasion. Still, with the pace Arrowhead has been going, there’s no shortage of content ahead.
This release isn't just about one game—it’s another crack in the wall of console exclusivity. With LEGO Horizon Adventures landed on Nintendo Switch, Hellblade 2 and The Outer Worlds 2 hitting PS5, and now Helldivers 2 arriving on Xbox, it's clear the gaming giants are opening up more than ever before.
