Helldivers 2 is officially coming to Xbox on August 26, 2025, but the biggest twist isn’t just the release—it’s who made the call. In a move few expected, it turns out Sony itself pushed for the game’s release on Xbox, not developer Arrowhead.
The surprising detail came straight from Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani, who took to the Helldivers 2 Discord to clear up the buzz. As spotted by Windows Central, when a fan praised Arrowhead for bringing the game to Xbox, Jorjani stepped in to give credit where it was due:
“It was all PlayStation. Send them your thanks! We were all in support of course.”
The confirmation stunned many in the community, especially considering Sony’s historically tight grip on exclusives. Jorjani didn’t stop there. When asked if he ever expected this kind of move from Sony, he added,
“I think it’s one of the coolest things they’ve done. They’re killing it.”
This makes Helldivers 2 a milestone moment. While MLB: The Show previously launched on Xbox, that was driven by Major League Baseball itself — not Sony. Helldivers 2 marks the first time Sony has proactively taken one of its own top live-service titles and put it on a rival console by choice.
The move is especially notable as Helldivers 2 has been Sony’s standout live-service success. Launched in 2024, the game peaked at over 450,000 concurrent players on Steam and continues to thrive across platforms. With its tactical PvE combat, chaotic co-op missions, and evolving Galactic War campaign, the game has maintained a strong, loyal player base.
Now, Xbox players will be able to join the fight—complete with full crossplay between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. It also launches the same day as Gears of War: Reloaded, setting the stage for a major day in cooperative gaming.
