Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-awaited sequel from Team Cherry, released on September 4, and the early numbers already put it among the most successful indie launches in recent years.
According to data from Alinea Insight, the game crossed the 5 million player mark in three days, with over a million of those coming through Xbox Game Pass on console.
Steam sales alone account for more than 3 million copies sold, generating an estimated $50 million in revenue.
That number makes Silksong the biggest indie launch tracked in that timeframe, outperforming other popular 2025 indie hits like Schedule 1 (858k), Peak (332k), and R.E.P.O. (253k) combined.
The player distribution tells an interesting story too. On Steam, the top markets were the US and China, followed by Russia, Japan, and Brazil.
PlayStation users leaned heavily toward North America (30%), with East Asia and Western Europe both sitting at 14%. Alinea also noted that while the Chinese translation sparked some debate online, it hasn’t slowed momentum.
Digging deeper into the audience overlap, around 78% of Steam players also own the original Hollow Knight. Nearly half of them also played Elden Ring, and a third spent time with Dark Souls 3 or Sekiro. And honestly, after banging my head against some of Silksong’s brutal bosses, I can see the connection.
The numbers are impressive, but considering the year of hype and the affordable price point ($20), it's no surprise. The original game sold 15 million, so with this momentum, it’s likely that the record will be broken soon.
