Hollow Knight: Silksong is almost here, and players eager to see how critics rate the long-awaited sequel won’t have to wait long — though not before launch. Team Cherry has confirmed that no early review codes will be distributed, meaning reviews are expected to go live on September 4, the same day the game officially releases.

This decision is tied directly to Team Cherry’s philosophy for the sequel’s rollout. As reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the developers felt it would be "unfair for critics to access the game before Kickstarter backers and day-one players" who have been waiting for the release for nearly eight years. Additionally, with the studio being a small team, preparing and distributing codes ahead of launch would have added to an already heavy workload.

Because of this, fans should not expect a flood of reviews at launch. Most critics will be playing alongside everyone else, which means the first impressions may come in the form of early reviews-in-progress rather than full verdicts. For those on the fence, patience will be key — comprehensive scores will likely take a few extra days to arrive.

Original Hollow Knight has over 90 critics scores and a 9.1 user score on Metacritic, cementing its place as one of the best indie titles of the last decade. Naturally, expectations for Silksong are sky-high.

Now all eyes are on September 4, when Hollow Knight: Silksong finally lands on consoles and PC.
