Hollow Knight just pulled off something impressive — it became the most-played game on Steam Deck in August, according to Valve. Not bad for an indie title that’s been around since 2017.
The sudden spike in popularity? All thanks to the long-awaited sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, finally getting a release date.
The buzz kicked off right after Gamescom, where Team Cherry confirmed that Silksong is dropping on September 4, 2025. Within days, players started diving back into the original game, and the numbers on Steam shot up fast. Hollow Knight broke past 20,000 concurrent players, and by September 1, it had climbed to over 71,000 — a record-breaking moment for the beloved Metroidvania.
On Steam Deck, the game didn’t just perform well — it dominated. Valve’s official rankings from August 3 to September 1 show Hollow Knight jumping 25 spots, helped by a 50% discount that brought the price down to just $7.49. That boost was enough to push it ahead of heavy-hitters like Stardew Valley, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3, and even Elden Ring.
Here’s how the Steam Deck Top 10 looked for August:
Hollow Knight – $7.49 (-50%) – ▲25 ranks
Stardew Valley – $14.99 – ▼1 rank
PEAK – $7.99 – ▲2 ranks
Cyberpunk 2077 – $59.99 – ▼1 rank
Balatro – $14.99 – ▼3 ranks
Baldur’s Gate 3 – $59.99 – ▼2 ranks
Brotato – $2.99 (-40%) – ▲1 rank
Elden Ring – $59.99 – ▼2 ranks
No Man’s Sky – $23.99 (-60%) – ▲28 ranks
Red Dead Redemption 2 – $14.99 (-75%) – ▼3 ranks
Hollow Knight’s recent surge shows just how strong the anticipation for Silksong really is. With the sequel launching across PC, Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, fans are hoping Team Cherry delivers another indie gem that lives up to—or even tops—the original.
