Larian Studios Says Goodbye to Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3

Larian Studios has officially bid farewell to Baldur's Gate 3, releasing Patch 8 as the final major content update for their critically acclaimed role-playing game. This last update brings several notable features before the studio moves on to future projects.

The final patch introduces cross-platform play between PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox, allowing players across different systems to adventure together. It also adds a new photo mode for capturing memorable moments, 12 additional character subclasses, and implements the long-awaited split-screen multiplayer feature for Xbox Series S users.

To mark this conclusion, Larian released a special animated short featuring the game's beloved characters embarking on one final adventure together. The studio's CEO, Swen Vincke, makes a cameo appearance in his signature armor, breaking the fourth wall to say goodbye.

"You've helped us make BG3 a bigger success than any of us could've ever hoped for," Larian stated in their farewell blog post. "That passion could keep us tweaking things and making changes until the end of time. But then we'd never be able to create something new."

The studio confirmed they will no longer add new storylines, characters, or significant narrative content to the game. While minor bug fixes might continue, Patch 8 represents the end of major development for Baldur's Gate 3.

As explained during their PAX West presentation last August, Larian feels it's time to "hang the armor on the wall" and focus on bringing players their next project—one that will be unrelated to the Dungeons & Dragons universe but described as "big and ambitious."

For fans of the Baldur's Gate series, Wizards of the Coast has hinted that a fourth installment may eventually be developed by another studio, though they're not rushing its production.
