Metaphor: ReFantazio has officially sold over 2 million copies, as confirmed by Sega Sammy during its latest management meeting.
The fantasy RPG, developed by Atlus's Studio Zero, first launched on October 11, 2024, and wasted no time making headlines. Within just 24 hours of release, the game crossed the 1 million sales mark—making it the fastest-selling title in Atlus's history and surpassing Persona 5 (took 1 month for 1 million).
The strong start was followed by steady, if not explosive, growth. By the close of Sega’s fiscal year 2025 on March 31, the game had doubled its sales to reach the 2 million milestone. While that’s a significant achievement, it also indicates that most of its commercial success came early in its release window.
Directed by Persona series veteran Katsura Hashino, with art by Shigenori Soejima and music composed by Shoji Meguro, Metaphor: ReFantazio blends Atlus’s signature style with a brand-new high-fantasy universe. Originally teased in 2016 under the name Project Re:Fantasy, the title represents Atlus’s first new IP since Catherine in 2011—a deliberate move to step outside the shadow of the Persona franchise and explore new creative territory.
Critical reception has been nothing short of glowing. The game earned Metacritic scores ranging from 93 to 94 across platforms, with reviewers praising its ambitious narrative, worldbuilding, visuals, soundtrack, and strategic combat. Major outlets like IGN and GameSpot even crowned it their Game of the Year for 2024. On Steam, the game attracted nearly 86,000 peak concurrent players, surpassing Persona 3 Reload, and has maintained a very positive rating with over 35,000 user reviews—90% of which are favorable.
Meanwhile, Studio Zero isn’t resting on its success. According to an October 2024 interview, Hashino confirmed that development is already underway on their next project. While he didn’t disclose any specifics, it’s clear that the team is eager to keep the momentum going following Metaphor's strong debut.
