Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Series Reportedly Set in Ancient Rome

A new report suggests that Netflix’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed live-action series will be set in Ancient Rome, specifically during the reign of Emperor Nero between 54–68 AD.

While Ubisoft and Netflix have yet to confirm these details, the leak comes from Nexus Point News, a site that has previously reported on other game-to-screen adaptations like God of War and Elden Ring.

A Long-Awaited Setting

Since its debut in 2007, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has explored countless historical eras, from the Italian Renaissance to Ancient Egypt. Yet Rome during Nero’s reign has remained untouched. Fans have often asked for this setting, and if the report is accurate, the series will finally deliver it—though not in game form, but through Netflix’s adaptation.

The show will reportedly feature historical figures such as Emperor Nero and his tutor Seneca the Younger, weaving them into the franchise’s trademark conflict between Assassins and Templars. Filming is said to be taking place in Italy, which aligns perfectly with the rumored setting.

Cast and Production

Actor Toby Wallace (Euphoria) has been confirmed as a co-lead, though his role remains under wraps. According to the report, Wallace will be part of an ensemble cast, meaning multiple leads will share the spotlight.

Behind the scenes, the show is being helmed by Roberto Patino (DMZ, Westworld) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming), who will serve as showrunners and executive producers.

Ubisoft executives including Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones are also attached, alongside producer Matt O’Toole.

According to Netflix’s official blurb, the series will "centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions - one set on determining mankind's future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity's destiny".

Production is expected to begin in early 2026 in Italy, making this Netflix’s second attempt at a live-action Assassin’s Creed adaptation after the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender.
