What We Know About the Setting
The choice of 64 A.D. Rome is a meaningful one. That particular year is historically significant because it marks the Great Fire of Rome. The fire started near the city's chariot stadium, Circus Maximus, and raged for several days. It damaged or destroyed more than half of the city.
Emperor Nero was away at the coastal resort of Antium during the blaze, which is where the famous phrase "Nero fiddled while Rome burned" comes from. He was widely blamed for the disaster, with some accusing him of starting the fire deliberately to rebuild Rome according to his vision. However, modern historians generally believe the fire was accidental.
This historical backdrop gives the series a rich and dramatic foundation to work with. It is also worth noting that while the Assassin's Creed game franchise has visited ancient Egypt, Greece, Renaissance Italy, feudal Japan, and revolution-era France, ancient Rome has never been the primary setting. So this is genuinely new territory for the franchise.
Production Details
As per reports, filming for the series began on March 9 and is expected to run through October 16, a production window of roughly seven months. The show is being shot entirely in Italy and is based at the iconic Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
The production will make use of Cinecittà's vast ancient Rome backlot, which includes a full replica of the Roman Forum. Additional shooting locations include Rome's Lazio region and Tuscany.
The Creative Team Behind the Show
The series is directed by Johan Renck, widely praised for his work on the HBO miniseries Chernobyl. Roberto Patino, a writer from Westworld, and David Wiener, creator of Homecoming, serve as showrunners and executive producers.
On the production side, Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones of Ubisoft Film and Television are executive producers, alongside Matt O'Toole.
Costume design is handled by Italy's Carlo Poggioli, whose credits include "The Leopard" and "The New Pope."
Release Window
The Assassin's Creed series is currently targeting a 2027 premiere on Netflix.
The Assassin's Creed game franchise has sold over 230 million units globally since its launch in 2007 and now spans 14 installments, so the pressure is on to deliver something worthy of that legacy.
