Netflix has closed Boss Fight Entertainment, the Texas-based studio best known for developing Squid Game: Unleashed.

The news surfaced through multiple LinkedIn posts from company leadership, confirming the shutdown without an official statement from Netflix itself.
Boss Fight had been working under Netflix since its acquisition in 2022, and the studio’s biggest project, Squid Game: Unleashed, quickly became a global hit, reaching the top spot in 26 countries. According to the studio, the game had been in development for about two years and involved nearly 100 developers. However, it’s unclear how many of the roughly 80 current staff members will be reassigned within Netflix’s gaming division or face layoffs.
CEO and cofounder David Rippy addressed the closure on LinkedIn, calling it “rough news” but expressing gratitude for the team’s accomplishments. Netflix games development director David Luehmann echoed those sentiments, saying he was proud of the studio’s decade-long journey and wished fans could see the projects that never made it to release. Design director Damion Schubert also reflected on his 10 years at Boss Fight, noting the frustration of creative work that will now remain unseen.
The closure comes as Netflix continues to reshape its gaming strategy. Nearly four years into its push into interactive entertainment, the company has shifted focus away from big-budget adaptations toward more casual, accessible titles. At the recent Bloomberg Screentime event, Co-CEO Greg Peters graded Netflix’s gaming efforts a “B-” and announced new party-focused games like Boggle Party, Pictionary: Game Night, Tetris Time Warp, and Lego Party.
Netflix’s president of games, Alain Tascan, has been steering this pivot, emphasizing smaller-scale projects tied to familiar IP. As per his comments at the Game Developers Conference earlier this year, the company is leaning into “couchplay” games designed to be enjoyed on the TV screen with friends and family.
