Former Grand Theft Auto developer Obbe Vermeij has shared his thoughts on Rockstar’s approach to age verification and its potential impact on GTA 6.

This follows the UK government’s recent implementation of the Online Safety Act, introducing some of the world’s strictest age-verification requirements for adult content. In response, companies like Xbox, Discord, and Spotify have already announced plans to implement verification systems.

According to well-known Rockstar insider TezFun, Rockstar Games is also preparing age verification systems for GTA Online. These measures could extend to in-game messages and Snapmatic.

While this move raised some concerns among fans — especially about how it might affect player numbers and sales of upcoming GTA 6 —Vermeij doesn’t see it as a major threat.

“Not something publishers like to do, but they may not have a choice with the new laws in some countries & states,” Vermeij explained in response to a fan on X (formerly Twitter).

He acknowledged that sales could take a small hit but pointed out that GTA’s player base is older now. “My money would still be on 6 outselling 5 eventually,” he added.

With GTA 6 shaping up to be one of the most anticipated launches in gaming history, a few extra checks at login probably won’t slow down its dominance.
