New Feature
Custom Protagonist Creation: First in series: Design your hero (appearance, voice, motions, fave dish, changeable jobs). Drives cohesive revenge story (70-100+ hour main quest) vs. 8 separate traveler arcs in OT1/2.
Town Building (Wishvale): Rebuild ruined hometown: Place 100+ facilities (Training Ground for auto-leveling inactive allies, shops/farms for items/buffs, Monster Arena, Museum for lore/music), 200+ decor. Invite 100+ NPCs/residents via new "Invite" Path Action for skills/benefits (e.g., cooking buffs EXP/JP). World info inspires builds; ties to journey.
30+ Recruitable Companions: Massive roster (story/sidequests; includes all 8 OT1 travelers like Ophilia, Cyrus, Tressa, Olberic, Primrose, Alfyn, Therion, and H’aanit). Form 8-member parties (4 front attackers, 4 back supporters/recoverers; mid-turn swaps/duos). No gacha—organic unlocks.
Combat Overhauls: 8-party battles w/ front/back rows; individual BP for frequent boosts. Action Skills: Equip/learn via items/training. Ultimate Techniques: Unique per character (e.g., Delitia's debuff aura, Goodwin's DoT lightning); 3-gauge levels for escalating power. Faster pacing, deeper tactics.
Amity Levels: Bond w/ allies via "Inquire Further" in town (use fave foods). Rewards items, boosts resident skills/facilities.
Party Chat: Auto-dialogue events (story/situations) reveal personalities/bonds; view missed ones in menu.
Sea Adventures: Ship travel across Middlesea/Outerseas: Explore islands, fight sea monsters—unique from land.
Enhanced Path Actions: NPC-dependent (Wealth: Purchase/Hire; Power: Contend/Impress; Fame: Entreat/Recruit/Invite). Success via influence.
Early Reviews: Critics Are Impressed
Octopath Traveler 0 is already performing well ahead of launch. According to aggregate sites, it currently stands at:
Metacritic: 87/100
OpenCritic: 82/100 (83% recommended)
Famitsu: 34/40
Reviewers are praising its refined combat, huge 70–100+ hour campaign, visual presentation, and a more cohesive revenge-driven narrative. The only consistent complaints seem to be a slow opening and overly familiar gameplay.
Highlighted Critic Opinions
Noisy Pixel – 10/10 “Regardless of its genre transformation, Octopath Traveler 0 is hands-down one of the best RPGs ever made. Its storytelling, characterizations, soundtrack, and densely interconnected gameplay loop are masterclass, even if it takes more than a little while for everything to click. Honestly, Square’s HD-2D output has been exceptional, and I’m eager to see where these efforts continue to grow.”
Game Informer – 8/10 "Octopath Traveler 0 is a slightly different approach to the series, especially since it’s made up of readjusted elements from the Champions of the Continent mobile game. Despite the inflated cast, the main characters are likable, and smart changes to the core battle system and the town-building aspect differentiate Octopath Traveler 0 from its predecessors. It's got a solid story and combat that puts a captivating twist on the classic turn-based formula. With a staggering amount of content, Octopath Traveler 0 will keep you entertained for dozens of hours."
GamesRadar – 8/10 "Although retreading a familiar nostalgic path, Octopath Traveler 0 improves its JRPG formula, while also being an enhanced and unabridged adaptation of the series' mobile spin-off without the grubby monetization. The cast may not have the same limelight as the original (flawed) premise intended but they still shine in turn-based battles that are among the genre's finest."
Push Square – 7/10 "Octopath Traveler 0 is a perfectly solid instalment in the Square Enix franchise, though its overwhelming familiarity will make large parts of it feel like a retread. Its town-building mechanic and expanded party system are smart expansions, and the move towards a single, centralised story is a benefit. However, Octopath Traveler 0 will still feel largely the same in an experience below that of its predecessors."
Overall, it seems like Octopath Traveler 0 might be landing in a sweet spot for longtime fans and curious newcomers alike.
