Sony has rolled out a new PlayStation 5 firmware update (version 24.01-08.60.00), and while it looks like just another routine patch on the surface, it’s caused quite a stir in the gaming community. The update quietly blocks the use of the Cronus Zen—a popular third-party device known for giving players an extra edge through features like aim assist, recoil control, and programmable macros.
Interestingly, Sony didn’t directly acknowledge the block in its official patch notes. That hasn’t stopped users from noticing, though. After the update went live, many players found that their Cronus Zen devices could no longer connect to the PS5 at all. The team behind Cronus quickly responded, advising users to avoid the update if they still wanted their device to work. Unfortunately, there’s no clear ETA for a fix—some speculate it could be a matter of hours, others say it might take months.
For a lot of competitive gamers, this move was long overdue. Titles like Call of Duty and Fortnite have been plagued by unfair play thanks to scripting tools like the Cronus Zen. With its ability to mimic near-perfect aim and reduce weapon recoil, it gave players an obvious advantage—especially in ranked lobbies or esports settings. So naturally, many in the community welcomed the block as a win for fair competition.
But it’s not all black and white. Not everyone using the Cronus Zen is trying to cheat. Some players rely on it for accessibility reasons, like remapping controls for disabilities, or enabling cross-platform controller support. With the block now in place, these users are caught in the crossfire, raising concerns about whether anti-cheat efforts might be unintentionally excluding players with real needs.
Sony’s move mirrors a growing trend in the industry. Developers like Activision, Ubisoft, and Epic Games have already been tightening the screws on external cheating tools. In fact, bans have been issued in games like Fortnite and Call of Duty specifically for using devices like the Cronus Zen.
Whether this was an intentional crackdown by Sony or just a technical byproduct of the update, the result is the same: Cronus Zen is currently sidelined on PS5, and the debate over what counts as cheating—and who gets hurt in the crossfire—is heating up again.
