Sony's PlayStation 5 has reached a total of 77.8 million units shipped globally, according to the company's latest financial report covering the first quarter of 2025.
The gaming giant shipped 2.8 million PS5 consoles during the January-March 2025 period. This represents a decline of 1.7 million units compared to the same three-month period last year, showing a potential slowdown.
Despite the dip in hardware sales, PlayStation Network continues to grow its user base. According to Sony's report, monthly active users on the PlayStation Network reached 124 million by the end of March 2025, adding 6 million new users compared to the same period in 2024.
Game sales remain strong as well, with combined PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software reaching 76.1 million units sold during the quarter. This marks an increase of 3.5 million units from the 72.6 million games sold during the same quarter last year.
However, first-party titles from Sony's own studios saw a significant decrease. These games accounted for just 5.9 million units, down sharply from 12.3 million units during the same period last year. The drop suggests Sony released fewer major exclusive titles during this quarter compared to early 2024.
Digital distribution continues to dominate. Sony reports that 80% of all game sales were digital downloads rather than physical discs, showing a three percent increase in digital adoption from the previous year.
