Both PlayStation 6 and Next Xbox Console Reportedly Targeting 2027 Release

Both Sony and Microsoft are reportedly preparing to launch their next-generation consoles in 2027. If true, this would put the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox console, codenamed Magnus, on a collision course for the same release window.

As spotted by VGC, the first claim came from KeplerL2, a hardware insider with a track record of accurate AMD-related leaks. In a NeoGAF discussion about Sony and AMD’s recent technology showcase, KeplerL2 stated that a 2027 release for the PS6 is “not just on the table, it’s the plan unless any unexpected delays happen.”

Another well-known insider, Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID), released a video claiming to show the AMD Magnus APU, which is expected to power Microsoft’s next Xbox. According to MLID, the console is also targeting a 2027 launch. He added that Microsoft has been telling partners behind the scenes that 2027 is the year Magnus will debut.

Interestingly, MLID suggested that the next Xbox may lean toward a console-PC hybrid design rather than competing directly with the PS6 as a traditional console. He described the APU as larger and more powerful than Sony's, but also more expensive due to its design and higher RAM capacity. In his words, “this time around Xbox is going to be much more than a console — it should also be something that can run more than just Xbox apps, and challenge the PC gaming market at least somewhat directly.”

Adding to the speculation, MLID previously claimed that Sony is also working on a PlayStation 6 handheld with Switch-style docking capabilities, though this remains unconfirmed.

For now, neither Sony nor Microsoft has officially commented on these reports. What we do know is that both companies are continuing their partnerships with AMD, setting the stage for another round of the console wars.
