Sony is preparing to make modular design a core feature of the PlayStation 6, with reports suggesting the console will launch with a detachable disc drive option.
If you remember, Sony tested the waters with this idea halfway through the PS5’s lifecycle. The Slim version of the console introduced a drive that could be attached or removed depending on whether players wanted physical discs or preferred to stick with digital downloads. At first, the move sparked debate — mainly around the cost of the add-on — but it ended up proving successful enough that Sony now seems to stick with the concept.
According to a report by Insider Gaming, the PlayStation 6 will follow the same formula, but from day one. Buyers will have three choices: pick up the digital-only version, buy a bundle with the detachable drive included, or grab the drive separately later.
The detachable drive wasn’t just a win for consumers; it also helped Sony on the production side. Sources quoted by Insider Gaming mentioned that the PS5’s modular approach hit all of Sony’s internal targets, especially in reducing shipping weight and manufacturing costs. These savings became even more important during recent trade and tariff challenges, which may explain why efficiency is a clear priority for the PS6’s design. In fact, early reports hint at a cleaner, more compact console than the PS5, making it easier to produce in large numbers.
Meanwhile, Sony hasn’t stopped refining its current generation. Last week, reports claimed that another PS5 Slim revision is on the way, this time slimming down storage to 825GB and shaving off even more weight. Moves like this highlight the company’s ongoing push to refine costs and design without compromising the core experience in “uncertain times”.
