Sony has officially confirmed that the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles will be going up in the United States starting August 21.
The standard PS5 will now be priced at $549.99, the Digital Edition will increase to $499.99, and the newly released PS5 Pro will cost $749.99.
Each model is getting a $50 increase compared to what players were paying before.
In a statement, the company explained the reasoning behind the move, noting that "similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment."
Sony added that the change was a "difficult decision" but necessary to address rising costs. Despite the increase, the company clarified that pricing for PlayStation 5 accessories will remain unchanged for now.
This shift doesn’t come out of nowhere. Sony has already implemented similar price adjustments across several regions, including Europe, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and select markets in the Middle East and Africa.
Earlier this year, the company also raised the cost of its PlayStation Plus subscription service in countries across Latin America, Southeast Asia, South Korea, Canada, and Turkey.
Daniel Ahmed, Director of Niko Partners, believes this situation is inevitable. Although Sony is shifting away from China for US shipments, it still relies heavily on Chinese manufacturing. With a 30% tariff on China, 15% on Japan, 20% on Vietnam, and 19% on Malaysia, Sony faces challenges no matter where it sources its products.
