Ubisoft has confirmed that the long-delayed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is still in development, though fans will need to stay patient a little longer.
Originally announced in September 2020, the remake of the beloved 2003 classic was initially scheduled for a January 2021 release. However, the game's reveal trailer received widespread criticism for its visuals and overall presentation, prompting Ubisoft to delay the project multiple times. What followed was a complete overhaul of the development process, including the transfer of development duties from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal — the original studio behind the franchise.
Over the years, updates on the remake have been sparse. The last major confirmation came in 2023 when Ubisoft stated the project wouldn’t be launching until at least 2026. Now, over a year later, Ubisoft has returned with another brief update — and while it’s far from a full re-reveal, it at least assures fans the project hasn’t been scrapped.
“Yep, we’re still deep in the game,” Ubisoft shared on social media. “Exploring, building, and ensuring the sands move with purpose.” The post was accompanied by a piece of concept art featuring a mystical glass palace beneath a pink-hued sky. While there’s still no gameplay footage or major new details, the tone of the message suggests the team remains passionate and dedicated to the remake.
“This game is being crafted by a team that truly cares,” Ubisoft added. “They’re pouring their hearts (and a lot of coffee) into every step. Thank you for sticking with us.”
In the following post, it also directed fans toward The Rogue Prince of Persia, a roguelike spin-off developed by Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells. That game is expected to leave early access in August 2025, providing a fresh way for fans to revisit the Prince of Persia universe in the meantime.
Ubisoft’s handling of The Sands of Time remake has been reflective of its broader struggles in recent years. The company has dealt with falling share prices, underperforming releases, layoffs, and even the shutdown of some internal studios. Earlier this year, Ubisoft revealed a structural shift by forming a new subsidiary focused on managing its key franchises — Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry. This restructuring, as per Ubisoft, is also intended to help “nurture the development of iconic franchises”.
While the wait for The Sands of Time remake continues, Ubisoft’s latest message shows that they’re not giving up on the project.
