Sony has just released a new software update for the PlayStation 3, despite the console being almost two decades old.
The new update, version 4.92, focuses on improving system performance. According to Sony's blog, it also renews the Blu-ray player encryption key, which is essential for those who still use their PS3 as a Blu-ray disc player.
To install this update, PS3 owners will need about 200MB of free space on their hard drive or removable storage. Sony has provided two different methods for updating the system software.
The first method is straightforward - users can update directly through their console.
Players simply need to go to the Settings tab, find the 'System Update' page, and select 'Update via Internet.'
After downloading, they can follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
For those who prefer updating via computer, there's a second option. This method requires using a USB drive:
First, format a USB drive as FAT32
Create a folder named "PS3" on the drive
Inside that folder, create another folder called "UPDATE"
Download the update file from Sony's website
Save the file as "PS3UPDAT.PUP" in the UPDATE folder
Connect the USB to the PS3
Go to Settings, then System Update, and select 'Update via Storage Media'
This update is particularly important for maintaining the console's Blu-ray playback functionality. Industry experts note that the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) encryption key regularly expires, requiring updates to continue playing newer Blu-ray discs.
While newer PlayStation consoles handle these key renewals automatically, the PS3 requires manual system updates.
The PlayStation 3 stopped production in 2017, about ten years after its initial launch. During its lifetime, Sony sold over 87.4 million PS3 units worldwide - fewer than the PS1, PS2, and PS4, but still an impressive number for its generation.
