The discovery was first shared by well-known dataminer Amethxst on X (formerly Twitter), who claims the symbol appeared sometime after March 2025. Unlike other icons such as Power Saver mode, which are already live, the “Cross-Buy” and “PS5/PC” logos have never been seen before. They match Sony’s official design language, suggesting they’re legitimate additions rather than fan-made fakes.

According to Amethxst, these icons were also spotted in PlayStation’s backend tools and even come with unique Unicode codes. To prove the find, the dataminer posted a short video showing the icons in action on a PS5 system.

So, what could “Cross-Buy” mean for PlayStation players? The most obvious interpretation is that Sony is preparing to let you buy a game once and play it across PS5 and PC, similar to Microsoft’s “Play Anywhere” program. This would be a big shift, considering Sony has traditionally kept its console and PC ecosystems separate. Some fans believe this could even tie into a rumored dedicated PC launcher, which has been hinted at in past leaks.

Another theory is that the feature could connect to Sony’s rumored next handheld device. While the recently released PlayStation Portal only supports Remote Play, a true portable successor, something closer to the PS Vita, would benefit from a unified Cross-Buy system. That way, your purchases could carry across PS5, PC, and handheld without extra cost.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that Sony could use the icon in a less exciting way, such as clarifying cross-buy between PS4 and PS5 versions of games. Still, the fact that the symbol isn’t present on PS4 systems suggests something bigger might be in the works.

For now, Sony hasn’t commented on the discovery, and nothing has been officially confirmed.
