Saros, the PS5 exclusive from Housemarque, is set to launch on April 30, 2026, and early reviews are calling it one of the best PlayStation games in recent memory.

Housemarque, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Returnal, is back with what looks to be their most complete game yet. Saros carries the DNA of Returnal but pushes the formula further in almost every direction. It is a third-person action roguelite wrapped in bullet-hell combat, cinematic storytelling, and a setting that feels genuinely unsettling.
The game takes place on Carcosa, a shape-shifting alien planet swallowed by an ever-growing eclipse. You play as Arjun Devraj, a Soltari Enforcer voiced by Rahul Kohli, best known from Netflix's Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Bly Manor. His mission begins as a rescue operation, but it spirals quickly into something far darker.
The story unfolds through exploration, audio logs, hologram recordings, and conversations with a full ensemble cast gathered in a hub area called The Passage. The crew of Echelon IV begins losing their minds to the Eclipse's influence, and trust becomes a fragile thing. It is a more narrative-driven experience than Returnal.
The core loop is intact. You run, you die, you return with more knowledge and some permanent upgrades. What is new is the parry mechanic, which lets you reflect enemy projectiles back at them with a well-timed press of R1.
There is also a Second Chance system that revives you once per run on your first death.
Carcosan Modifiers let you customize your playstyle across runs, and the permanent loadout system means progress feels meaningful over time.
The game is strictly single-player with no co-op at launch. According to the available information, no multiplayer mode has been confirmed, though Returnal eventually received co-op as a post-launch update.

What the Critics Are Saying
The review embargo has lifted, and the scores are impressive. Saros currently sits at an 88 on Metacritic, which is a strong showing for any game. Critics across the board are praising the combat, the atmosphere, and the way Housemarque has made the experience more welcoming without gutting its difficulty.
PlayStation Universe and VGC both gave it a perfect score. VGC wrote that "Saros is a bold, confident realization of 30 years of Housemarque," adding that it "builds on the mystery and exceptional gameplay of Returnal with an excellent lead performance."
COGconnected awarded it a 96, calling it "a masterpiece" and describing it as "not just a Game of the Year contender, but one of the defining games of its generation."
Game Informer scored it a 93, and the reviewer's enthusiasm was hard to miss: "Moving, shooting, improving, winning, and even losing is an unequivocal joy in Saros, and I only wish I could write this sentence faster so I can hurry up and get back to planet Carcosa."
GameSpot and Game Rant both landed at 90. GameSpot noted that "Saros elevates the studio's roguelite formula to another level," while Game Rant called it "easily one of the PS5's best exclusives."
The scores round out as follows:
PlayStation Universe: 100
VGC: 100
COGconnected: 96
Game Informer: 93
GameSpot: 90
Game Rant: 90
GamesRadar+: 80
TheGamer: 80
Eurogamer: 80
IGN: 70
IGN was on the lower end with a 70, noting that "Saros tries at an interesting and ambitious story it isn't always able to effectively tell," though still acknowledging that "Housemarque has once again proved that its bullet-hell sensibilities mesh incredibly well with fluid and challenging action."
