ShantyTown Release Guide: Date, Times, Platforms, and Price

ShantyTown, an indie city-building game, is all set to launch on PC via Steam this week.

Developed by solo developer Erik Rempen under the Silk Softworks and Kinephantom Games banner, the game offers a cozy, diorama-style take on urban building that feels more like crafting a miniature world than managing a full-blown city.

Gameplay and Features

You play as a Surveyor exploring the semi-futuristic fantasy land of Westmarsh. Your goal is to build and photograph 20 distinct and quirky locations across the world, made up of 8 required sites and 12 optional ones.

The core loop revolves around hands-on diorama building. You place buildings, decorations, lights, utilities, and small details one by one into compact, layered spaces. Buildings have their own needs, such as lighting and utilities, and fulfilling those needs unlocks bonus objects and upgrades. The game leans heavily into density, rewarding players who pack every corner with life and character.

Key features include:

  • Creative freedom with no strict resource limits

  • Photography mode to capture your finished scenes

  • A relaxing pace backed by soothing music and visuals

  • An expanded Creative Mode for endless, open-ended building
