Team Cherry’s co-founders say they may skip The Game Awards 2025 despite Hollow Knight: Silksong being nominated in five major categories.

In a new interview with Bloomberg, Team Cherry’s Ari Gibson and William Pellen opened up about Silksong’s reception and what’s next for the studio, but one moment that stood out was their surprisingly honest take on this year’s Game Awards. When asked whether they plan to attend the Los Angeles event on December 11, the duo didn’t sound too eager to make the trip. Pellen simply said, “Maybe not. We’re pretty busy.”
The conversation shifted when Gibson was asked if they’d at least record a video message in case they win something. Instead of sounding hopeful, Gibson admitted he believes Silksong is unlikely to take home any trophies this year. According to him, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has a broader appeal that might sway both critics and fans. “I think Expedition 33 — it’s exceptional and broadly palatable,” he said. “Whereas we’re on that knife’s edge, where it appeals to some and infuriates others.”
Silksong is nominated for five categories, including Game of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Independent Game, and Best Action/Adventure Game. Expedition 33 appears in nearly all of them as well—except Action/Adventure—making the competition between the two games especially tight. Sandfall Interactive’s RPG has earned a massive 12 nominations, marking the highest ever for a single game in The Game Awards’ history.
But if we’ve followed previous years, we know that a high nomination count doesn’t always guarantee a sweeping victory. The Game Awards results are determined by a mix of 90% jury voting and 10% fan votes. So there's always a chance the final outcome could surprise all of us.
Beyond awards talk, the interview also touched on Team Cherry’s future plans. The co-founders confirmed that they’re already developing DLC for Silksong and also hinted at potential projects outside of the Hollow Knight universe.
