Sony appears to be preparing a major upgrade to the PlayStation 5 Pro's graphical capabilities, centered around an enhanced version of its AI-powered upscaling tech, PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). The improvement could significantly boost performance and visual fidelity across future games.
“PSSR 2” in the Works?
The report comes from reliable tech YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, who suggests that Sony is working on what could be considered "PSSR 2". "I don't know if Sony will brand it… but there's been at least three or more versions of PSSR updated behind the scenes," the YouTuber noted.
This upgraded version is expected to let developers render games at much lower native resolutions, while using smarter AI-based upscaling to deliver sharp, high-quality visuals—much like NVIDIA’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR, but optimized for Sony’s hardware.
🎯 Ambitious Performance Targets
Sony is reportedly aiming for breakthrough performance benchmarks with the updated PSSR tech:
4K at 120 FPS
8K at 60 FPS
1440p and 1080p at 120 FPS
Improved quality even from base resolutions as low as 720p, 540p, and 360p
This would offer developers massive flexibility in balancing performance vs. visual quality, potentially extending the capabilities of the PS5 Pro far beyond current expectations.
Sony reportedly wants to fix current limitations where PSSR image quality drops significantly below 864p, allowing more aggressive optimization.
Real-World Use Already Showing Promise
PSSR is already live in some games, including the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows, where it helps deliver a smooth 60 FPS experience with enhanced detail. However, like DLSS and FSR, developers must explicitly integrate PSSR into their games to make use of the benefits.
Sony is also said to be working on making PSSR a potential replacement for TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing), which could improve image stability and sharpness in games even when not chasing ultra-high frame rates.
What’s Next: PSSR in 2026 and the Road to PS6
PlayStation’s lead system architect Mark Cerny has already confirmed that a major PSSR update is slated for 2026, but these new reports suggest Sony is far deeper into development than previously believed.
Reports suggest that Sony seems to be treating PS5 Pro as a testbed for next-gen AI graphics technology— laying the groundwork for PS6 innovations.
