Sony Welcomes New Game Studio TeamLFG to PlayStation Family

TeamLFG

Sony has added a new game studio called teamLFG to its PlayStation Studios family. The studio was born from Bungie, the creators of popular games like Destiny and Halo.

TeamLFG is made up of experienced developers from well-known games such as Destiny, Halo, League of Legends, Fortnite, and Roblox. The team also includes newcomers to the industry who bring fresh ideas to the table.

According to the PlayStation Blog, the name "LFG" stands for "Looking For Group," which highlights the studio's aim to create live service games.

"We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online," the studio explained in their statement. "We want our players to recognize familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other."

The new studio is based in Bellevue, Washington, with team members working both in the office and remotely across the United States and Canada. They're focused on creating what they call "immersive multiplayer worlds" with action-based gameplay that players can enjoy for many hours.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst mentioned that teamLFG started as an "incubation project" at Bungie and has now grown into a complete studio ready to join PlayStation Studios. This development comes after Sony acquired Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 billion, partly to strengthen its live-service game offerings.

TeamLFG is already working on their first game, which they describe as a "team-based action game." The new title will combine elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life simulation games, and what they interestingly call "frog-type games." Players will enter a light-hearted, comedic world set in a new "mythic, science-fantasy universe."

This news comes at an important time for Sony's live-service game strategy. Recently, the company has faced challenges with this type of game. Their multiplayer game Concord didn't succeed as hoped, and earlier this year, Sony canceled two live-service projects, which led to layoffs.

The formation of teamLFG appears to be part of Sony's ongoing effort to strengthen its position in the live-service game market, building on the expertise that came with the Bungie acquisition.

While no release date or platforms were announced for teamLFG's first game, gaming fans will be watching closely to see what this new studio creates.
