Indie studio Team Cherry has revealed that it may focus on creating a brand-new game rather than moving directly into Hollow Knight 3.

The co-founders, Ari Gibson and William Pellen, admitted during an interview with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier (via IGN) that their biggest concern isn’t about ideas or resources—it’s about time itself.
Gibson explained that developing Silksong took 7 years, far longer than expected. “The only time concern really is death,” he said, noting that if each project takes nearly a decade, the studio might only have a handful of games left to make.
"It’s not that far off if you spend seven years per project, and potentially add another two. So it’d be nice to do a few more games. Apparently our timeframe still allows us to fit a few more in. Short of an unexpected tragedy."
This isn’t the first time mortality has entered the conversation in game development. In 2023, Bethesda’s Todd Howard admitted that The Elder Scrolls 6 might be the last entry he personally works on, simply because of how long these projects take. Similarly, Hideo Kojima reflected on his own health struggles during the pandemic, saying he realized he might only have 10 years left to create games or films.
What’s Next for Team Cherry?
Despite the heavy tone, Gibson and Pellen emphasized that they do have other games planned. Whether it’s Hollow Knight 3 or something entirely new, they want to keep "exploring big worlds full of weird characters and giant bosses and whatnot."
“We don’t want to be exclusively people that make Hollow Knight,” Gibson explained, though he didn’t rule out returning to the series in some form.
The studio also confirmed plans for adding new content to Silksong, showing that they are not yet finished current project. But once that’s complete, the door is wide open. Whether they dive back into the Hollow Knight universe or branch out into something entirely new, the team seems determined to make the most of the time they have.
