Bloober Team’s psychological horror title The Medium is now getting a film adaptation, with Gary Dauberman — the writer-producer behind It, Annabelle, and The Nun — securing the screen rights.
The upcoming project will be produced under Coin Operated, the horror-focused production banner Dauberman founded, with his company president, Mia Maniscalco, also on board.
While the project is still in early stages, a search for a writer and director is already underway. Dauberman described The Medium as a “natural” fit for the big screen thanks to its “compelling story and incredibly cinematic visuals.” Speaking about his collaboration with Bloober Team, he noted a shared passion for horror and praised the studio’s forward-thinking approach to the genre.
The game, released in 2021, is set in 1990s post-communist Poland and follows Marianna, a psychic medium who can explore both the physical world and the spirit realm simultaneously. Most of the story unfolds in an abandoned Krakow hotel, where she investigates the haunting mystery behind a child’s death. The title stood out for its dual-reality gameplay and its artistic direction, heavily inspired by the dystopian works of Zdzisław Beksiński. Its haunting atmosphere was further enhanced by an original soundtrack composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski and Silent Hill veteran Akira Yamaoka.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno believes Dauberman is the perfect fit for the adaptation, stating that their vision for horror aligned from their very first conversation. Bloober Team, known for titles like Observer, Layers of Fear, and the Silent Hill 2 remake, has established itself as a leading name in atmospheric horror, and this partnership could take that legacy to the next level.
Interestingly, this isn’t Dauberman’s first time adapting a horror game for film — he was also involved in the Until Dawn adaptation alongside PlayStation Productions. His current production slate also includes a modern reboot of Urban Legend and a horror film based on Joe Hill’s short story Ushers.
Meanwhile, Bloober Team is preparing to launch Cronos: The New Dawn later this year. The game, which recently got a new trailer at Nintendo Partner Direct, is set to release on September 5, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and macOS.
