Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow officially arrives on major VR platforms, bringing the iconic stealth franchise into virtual reality for the first time.

For players like us who grew up hearing about how Thief practically shaped the stealth-action genre in the late ’90s, seeing the series return in a made-for-VR format feels like a moment worth pausing for. This new chapter, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, is being developed by Maze Theory in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal and published by Vertigo Games.
In this new story, you step into the shoes of Magpie, a skilled thief who’s crafty rather than lethal. As per descriptions from the developers, Magpie isn’t meant to be an assassin. She’s a survivor navigating The City, using her wits, agility, and a solid toolkit to steal what needs to be stolen.
What really stood out to me is the level design philosophy. According to insights shared by Vertigo Games Principal Designer Nick Witsel to PlayStation Lifestyle, each mission includes multiple routes and solutions, meaning you’re free to adapt your approach. Want to sneak past guards entirely? Go for it. Want to distract, disable, or quietly knock out trouble when needed? You can do that too, though every choice comes with risks. VR pulls you deeper into these decisions—peeking around corners, physically bending to hide, or multitasking with tools while checking your surroundings.
You’ll use your hands to pickpocket, pry open hidden compartments, fire arrows, and even manipulate objects to create distractions. You’ll be sneaking across rooftops, weaving through narrow alleys, and uncovering secrets across a massive steampunk-inspired City ruled by the ruthless Baron Ulysses Northcrest.

Story-wise, Thief VR introduces a fresh lead, but fans of the earlier games won’t feel left out. Magpie’s journey involves a search for a legendary artifact, a conspiracy buried deep in The City’s history, and a surprising appearance from Garrett himself. As per Witsel’s comments, working with Stephen Russell again was a huge moment for the team, and hearing Garrett return to the world of Thief completes that nostalgic puzzle piece for longtime fans.
Maze Theory has also confirmed that their goal was to create a game that respects the franchise’s roots while staying accessible for newcomers. If you’re jumping into Thief for the first time because of VR, the devs advise one thing—remember you're a thief, not a fighter. Stealth is your greatest weapon.
