Ubisoft may have accidentally revealed that a television adaptation of its popular Far Cry franchise is in the works at FX.

A post briefly appeared on the official Ubisoft website detailing the project before being swiftly taken down and redirected to the homepage. However, the internet moves fast, and several users managed to capture screenshots and share the information on social media platforms.

The removed post reportedly revealed that the series is being co-created by Rob McElhenney — known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest, and Welcome to Wrexham — and Noah Hawley, the creative mind behind Fargo and Alien: Earth.

Hawley will also serve as the showrunner, while McElhenney is expected to star.

Production responsibilities are split across multiple teams, with McElhenney, Hawley, and Jackie Cohn representing More Better Productions, Michael Garcia from 26Keys Productions, Nick Frenkel from 3Arts Entertainment, and Ubisoft’s own Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill on board as executive producers.

Boykin, head of film and television content at Ubisoft Film & Television, was quoted in the now-deleted article describing the project as a “psychological tailspin” that explores both the "darkest and most absurd aspects of humanity" — an approach she said fits perfectly with FX’s bold storytelling style.

As per the reports, the Far Cry series is planned as an anthology drama. Each season will feature a new world and cast, echoing the video game franchise’s tradition of standalone narratives with distinct settings and characters.

Interestingly, the deleted post’s URL slugfar-cry-series-adaptation-in-the-works-at-fx — is still accessible, strongly suggesting the project’s existence. It’s likely that the report contained an issue or error that could be corrected, and we might see an updated post soon.

This development follows Ubisoft’s recent efforts to expand its major franchises beyond gaming. Back in March, the company announced the formation of a new subsidiary aimed at growing Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry into broader entertainment properties. The move came after a €1.16 billion investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent, which acquired a minority stake in the new venture.

The timing also aligns with Ubisoft’s broader creative shifts. Far Cry’s last mainline game, Far Cry 6, launched in 2021 to mixed reception, and the series has since been largely quiet. Meanwhile, other reports indicate that Ubisoft is also working on a Far Cry-themed extraction shooter, which has undergone an internal reboot.

For now, fans will have to wait for an official confirmation, but if these leaks hold true, the Far Cry universe could soon be getting a gritty, character-driven TV adaptation on FX.
