MachineGames has made it clear that Wolfenstein isn’t finished yet.
At the end of Noclip’s second episode covering the history of MachineGames, studio head Jerk Gustafsson revealed that the team still wants to make a direct sequel to Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (2017). For longtime fans, that’s big news, considering it’s been years since we last played as BJ Blazkowicz.
“We have always seen this as a trilogy,” Gustafsson explained. “That journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at ID Software, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least [BJ], what would happen in the second one and what would happen in the third one. I think that’s important to say, because—at least I hope—we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”
Gustafsson’s comments make it clear the team still views BJ’s arc as unfinished. And honestly, I get it—The New Colossus ended on a note that was both open and conclusive at the same time. Then came 2019’s spinoff Youngblood, which skipped forward nearly two decades and shifted the spotlight to BJ’s twin daughters. For many, it felt like BJ’s story got pushed aside without a proper conclusion.
The challenge, of course, is figuring out where a sequel could even fit. Do they bridge the gap between The New Colossus and Youngblood with an interquel? Do they pick up after the less-loved spinoff and push forward? Or maybe they’ll shake things up with a timeline twist. None of these routes are simple, especially for a franchise so focused on its story.
Meanwhile, MachineGames hasn’t exactly been idle. Their recent work on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (and its DLC, The Order of Giants) showed they still have the chops for cinematic, story-driven adventures. That makes me feel pretty confident they could pull off another Wolfenstein, even with the tricky narrative puzzle in front of them.
