Xbox Ally Roadmap Revealed: What’s Next for Microsoft’s Handheld

Xbox has revealed a more detailed roadmap for the future of the Xbox Ally, highlighting plans for software updates and long-term support as the handheld device now becomes available in 45 countries.

Developed in partnership with ASUS, the handheld comes in two versions: the standard Xbox Ally, which uses AMD’s Z2 A chip, and the more powerful Xbox Ally X, equipped with the Z2 Extreme processor.

What makes the Ally stand out is its deep collaboration between Xbox and Windows. The device introduces a Full Screen Experience (FSE) that boots directly into the Xbox app, giving it a console-like feel. It also disables unnecessary Windows background tasks to free up resources — something handheld PC users have been requesting for years.

You can access storefronts like Steam and Epic Games, play Xbox Play Anywhere titles, and stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play. That means if a game isn’t available natively, you can still stream it from your console or the cloud.

According to Microsoft, Ally users can expect several updates in the coming months:

  • Default Game Profiles – Automatically adjust settings per game to balance performance and battery life.

  • Enhanced Docking Experience – Smoother transitions and better scaling when connected to a monitor or TV.

  • AI-Powered Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) – Uses AI to sharpen visuals and upscale games closer to 1080p or 1440p without heavy performance costs.

  • AI Highlight Reels – Automatically captures gameplay moments worth saving, perfect for creators who don’t want to record everything manually.

The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is priced at $599.99, while the upgraded ROG Xbox Ally X carries a steep price tag of $999.99.
