11 Bit Studios Announces Frostpunk 1886, A Complete Remake Coming in 2027

Frostpunk 1886

Polish game developer 11 Bit Studios has revealed plans to remake their original Frostpunk game, with the new version titled "Frostpunk 1886" scheduled for release in 2027. The announcement comes just months after the successful launch of Frostpunk 2.

The remake will be built using Unreal Engine 5, replacing the company's older proprietary Liquid Engine that powered the original 2018 release. This significant upgrade aims to enhance both visuals and gameplay while introducing several new features fans have been requesting for years.

According to the official press release, the development team began work on Frostpunk 1886 earlier this year. The title specifically references a crucial moment in the game's timeline when the Great Storm descended upon New London, the central city players must build and manage.

"This newly announced project marks a return to the franchise's roots, offering both newcomers and longtime citizens of New London an evolved take on the harsh, morally challenging survival experience that started it all," the developer stated.

The decision to remake the original game came while the team was developing Frostpunk 2 using Unreal Engine 5. They realized the limitations of their older Liquid Engine and saw an opportunity to revitalize their first title with modern technology.

The studio emphasized that Frostpunk 2 will receive support alongside the remake's development, with free major updates, DLC content, and a console port.

One of the most exciting announcements for longtime fans is the addition of mod support, something that was technically impossible with the original engine. The move to Unreal Engine 5 will allow players to create and share custom content, potentially extending the game's lifespan far beyond its initial release.

The remake won't simply be a visual upgrade, as the developers plan to expand the core experience with new content, updated mechanics, additional laws, and more extensive technology options. Perhaps most intriguing is the mention of "an entirely new Purpose path," suggesting a fresh storyline or moral direction even veteran players haven't experienced.

The announcement follows an extraordinarily successful financial period for the company. Reports indicate that 11 Bit Studios had a record-breaking year in 2024, generating revenue of approximately $35 million USD (PLN 140.54 million) – a 168.9% increase compared to the previous year. Much of this success came from Frostpunk 2, which sold 592,000 copies by the end of December 2024, bringing in around $17.5 million USD.

Interestingly, the original Frostpunk continues to perform well financially nearly seven years after its initial release. Combined with another 11 Bit Studios title, This War of Mine, these older games generated approximately $9 million USD in 2024, showing a 13.7% increase over 2023 figures.

The studio is also working on another title called The Alters, scheduled for release in June this year.

While fans will need to wait until 2027 for Frostpunk 1886, the developers have promised to reveal more details and deeper looks at the game in the coming months. The Steam page for the remake is already live, allowing interested players to add it to their wishlists.
