Amazon MGM Studios has officially given the green light to a Life is Strange television adaptation, ordering it straight to series.
Based on the acclaimed narrative-driven video game franchise, the show will be helmed by Charlie Covell, best known for adapting The End of the F*ing World and Kaos. Covell will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
The series is being produced in collaboration with Square Enix, the rights holder of the Life is Strange IP, alongside Story Kitchen — the team behind the Sonic the Hedgehog films — and LuckyChap, the production company co-founded by Margot Robbie.
“It’s a huge honor to be adapting Life Is Strange for Amazon MGM Studios,” Covell said in a statement. “I am a massive fan of the game, and I’m thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap. I can’t wait to share Max and Chloe’s story with fellow players and new audiences alike.”
According to the official synopsis, the show will adapt the first game in the series, following Max, a photography student who discovers she can rewind time after saving her childhood best friend, Chloe. As they grapple with the consequences of this power, the pair investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student, uncovering dark secrets about their town and facing an impossible life-or-death decision.
A Life is Strange adaptation has been in development limbo for nearly a decade, with various studios attached over the years. Back in 2021, singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes was linked to the project to oversee its music, though it’s unclear if he remains involved.
The announcement comes during a busy period for video game adaptations. Paramount recently confirmed a Call of Duty movie, Amazon revealed Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in its Tomb Raider series, Netflix cancelled The Legend of Lara Croft, and the Street Fighter film secured a release date and cast.
First released in 2015 by French developer Dontnod Entertainment, Life is Strange became a critical and commercial hit, spawning multiple sequels, including 2024’s Life is Strange: Double Exposure from Deck Nine. Now, with Prime Video backing and a proven showrunner at the helm, Max and Chloe’s story is set to reach an even wider audience.
