Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Could Be Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 — But Dev Kit Drama Might Be Holding It Back

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has quickly become one of 2025’s standout titles. With a Metacritic score that tops the charts, over 3.3 million copies sold in just 33 days, and praise from streamers, critics, and even the French Prime Minister, it’s no surprise fans are wondering what platform it might conquer next. While the game is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, recent reports suggest a Nintendo Switch 2 version might be in the cards — though nothing’s confirmed yet.

The speculation stems from a report by French outlet Nintenderos, which reached out to developer Sandfall Interactive about a potential Switch 2 port. The studio responded cautiously: “We have some possibilities that we will explore, but at the moment we cannot confirm anything.”

Earlier in May, CEO Guillaume Broche hinted in an interview with streamer Mistermv that the game’s success had opened doors, and that a Switch 2 version could be “interesting.”

But there’s a catch — and it’s not just about interest. According to Digital Foundry (via NintendoLife), multiple developers at Gamescom 2025 said that Nintendo has been extremely selective in distributing Switch 2 dev kits. Even some AAA studios have reportedly been left waiting, while smaller indie teams have received kits seemingly at random. The result? A lot of confusion and a growing backlog of games that could be ported — but aren’t yet in development.

Developers have described the situation as “weird” and “inconsistent,” with some being told to build for the original Switch and rely on backward compatibility instead of native Switch 2 support. Nintendo’s tight security protocols — including locked rooms and restricted access — are likely aimed at preventing leaks, but they’re also slowing down third-party progress.

So while Sandfall isn’t ruling out a Switch 2 version of Clair Obscur, the lack of dev kit access may be the real reason behind the silence. For now, fans will have to wait and see if this critically acclaimed RPG makes its way to Nintendo’s next-gen hardware. We’ll keep tracking updates as they unfold.
