File Size and Installation
Pearl Abyss confirmed in a launch FAQ that an internet connection is required during the initial setup to download the day-one patch. After that, the game can be played offline.
The install size is quite heavy, which is expected given the massive open-world scope. Here is the breakdown per platform:
PC (Steam/Epic): Around 121 to 135 GB actual install, with 150 GB recommended free space on an SSD
PS5/PS5 Pro: Approximately 125 to 130 GB total after day one patch
Xbox Series X and S: Around 120 GB based on community preload reports
Make sure your storage is cleared up ahead of time, especially on a PC where an SSD is mandatory.
Platform
Crimson Desert is available on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and S, Steam (PC and Mac), Epic Games Store, Mac App Store, GeForce NOW, and Xbox on PC.
Cross-save is not supported between platforms.
On the technical side, the game supports an impressive range of upscaling and graphics technologies:
PC: FSR 3/4, DLSS 4/4.5, AMD FSR Ray Regeneration, Nvidia DLSS Ray Reconstruction
PS5 Pro: Upgraded PSSR
PS5/Xbox Series: FSR 3
Mac: MetalFX Upscaler, Frame Generation, and Denoiser
Frame generation is limited to PC and Mac only.
Console Controversy
The console versions of Crimson Desert have been under a lot of scrutiny leading up to launch. Many fans accused Pearl Abyss of intentionally hiding how the PlayStation and Xbox versions looked, drawing comparisons to the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077.
Pearl Abyss marketing chief Will Powers pushed back on those concerns publicly. "We're not hiding anything, and I'm sick of having to repeat myself," Powers said. "I've repeated hundreds of times that we'll reveal things ahead of launch to give people adequate time to still preorder the game for themselves. Let us cook? Please and thank you."
It is worth noting that while the PS5 Pro and base PS5 versions have been shown publicly, Pearl Abyss has yet to show any Xbox console footage ahead of launch.
Early Impressions Are Promising
Before the official review embargo lifted on March 18 at 3:00 PM PT, some early impressions had already surfaced online. Korean streamer and YouTuber G-tti played the game for around ten hours a day after receiving a review code, and his takeaways are hard to ignore.
According to those early impressions, the game was completed without the day-one patch installed, and only minor bugs were encountered throughout.
Some other highlights from his impressions include:
Character swapping works similarly to GTA V, complete with transition effects and characters continuing their routines when swapped in
Every region has a different difficulty level, getting harder as you move east and north
The main story can be brutally difficult if you rush it without upgrading the main character, Kliff
Inventory space feels tight early on, but opens up as side quests reward additional storage
The game's score and soundtrack were described as legendary
He had still not seen 50% of the bosses after finishing the game
He drew comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2 in terms of pacing, noting he had put around 600 hours into that game
Played on 5080 at 1440p cinematic settings without frame drops or stutters
G-tti went as far as calling Crimson Desert the "game of his life." Another Korean reviewer, when asked for their take, responded by sharing a 1998 EGM quote about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that reads, "Savor it, because this is as good as it's going to get for a very long time."
That kind of praise is significant. Whether the full critical reception matches that level of enthusiasm will become clear once reviews go live. For now, the signs are pointing in a very positive direction.
Crimson Desert launches March 19, 2026, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S.
