Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is now officially in production, as confirmed by the creators during Anime Expo 2025. The highly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed anime was announced during a special behind-the-scenes panel, giving fans a fresh glimpse into what’s coming next in the neon-lit world of Night City.
The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, released in 2022, gained massive popularity for its emotional storytelling, slick animation, and faithfulness to the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The show not only stood on its own as a hit anime but also helped reignite interest in the base game itself. So naturally, fans have been buzzing with anticipation, especially after a teaser last month hinted at a sequel. Now, it’s official — and there’s a lot to unpack.
During the Anime Expo panel, the creators revealed that Edgerunners 2 will be a 10-episode standalone series, diving into “a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge.” That alone sets the tone for something darker and more grounded than the first season. The panel featured key figures like story writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor, voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy) and Zach Aguilar (David), and Season 1 director Hiroyuki Imaishi. The team confirmed that CD Projekt Red is once again collaborating with Studio TRIGGER to bring the sequel to life.
This time, there are some big shifts behind the scenes. The second season will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, who previously directed Episode 6 of Season 1 and will now make his full directorial debut. Sztybor returns as showrunner, writer, and producer, while Kanno Ichigo is stepping in as the new lead character designer. Meanwhile, Masahiko Otsuka will handle the screenplay adaptation duties.
Interestingly, while the logo and promotional posters were revealed publicly, the teaser trailer wasn’t shown at the main panel. According to host Joey “The Anime Man” Bizinger, the footage was deemed “too bloody” for a general audience and was instead presented during a closed-door screening at Studio TRIGGER’s private session. As of now, no official release window has been shared, but the series is confirmed to debut on Netflix.
