FromSoftware might be ready to revisit one of its biggest hits, as multiple sources now suggest that Dark Souls 3 is getting a remaster, with a release date potentially set for 2026.
The speculation around this remaster has been picking up traction for a while, but recent developments have added more weight to the rumors. A report from MP1st points to a mysterious new project at FromSoftware, internally known by the codename “FMC.”
According to the report, the title is already in the advanced stages of development and is slated for release no later than next year. Importantly, FMC is described as a multiplatform release—ruling out the upcoming Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods.
Earlier, XboxEra’s Nick “Shpeshal Nick” Baker claimed in a November 2024 podcast that a Dark Souls 3 Remaster was in the works. He didn’t pin down a release window, but the timing lines up perfectly for a 10th-anniversary edition, considering the original game launched in March 2016.
FromSoftware is known for its use of internal abbreviations for game codenames. Previous titles like Dark Souls 3 (FDP), Dark Souls Remastered (FHD), and Armored Core VI (FNR) followed a similar pattern. That makes FMC a likely candidate for a new remaster or spin-off from one of these franchises. Given Dark Souls 2 has already received a next-gen upgrade and Dark Souls 1 was remastered in 2018, DS3 is the most logical choice left.
While the studio’s focus recently includes Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods, director Hidetaka Miyazaki has reassured fans that FromSoftware is not abandoning traditional single-player experiences. In a recent statement, he clarified that multiplayer experiments like The Duskbloods don’t signal a permanent shift in design philosophy. “We still intend to actively develop single-player-focused games such as this that embrace our more traditional style,” Miyazaki explained.
It’s worth noting that although Miyazaki previously described Dark Souls 3 as “the big closure on the series,” that doesn’t necessarily rule out a remaster—especially one aimed at preserving the legacy of the franchise with modern visuals and quality-of-life improvements.
The debate still remains on how extensive this remaster might be. Will it merely boost resolution and frame rates, or could it bring deeper changes like reworked visuals, faster loading, or even expanded content? FromSoftware has certainly grown as a developer in the past decade, and fans are hoping that a Dark Souls 3 Remaster would reflect that evolution.
Until something official is announced—possibly at upcoming events like Gamescom or The Game Awards—it’s all speculation. But considering the consistent reliability of the sources involved, there’s a strong chance that the dark, brutal world of Lothric will rise again in stunning detail.
For now, fans will have to stay patient and keep their Estus Flasks ready.
