The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has officially surpassed 9 million players across all platforms since its launch on April 22.
The impressive milestone reflects the remaster’s continued popularity through the summer, especially on Xbox Game Pass, where it has seen strong engagement from both longtime fans and newcomers.
Bethesda shared the news via social media, accompanied by a nostalgic tribute to in-game achievements — from becoming the Hero of Kvatch to donning the mantle of the Gray Fox. The announcement featured a cheeky image of the Adoring Fan with his signature blond hair curled into the shape of a “9” (as shown in the above image).
Though the remaster launched just days before the end of April, Oblivion Remastered was the best-selling game in the U.S. that month, as per a Circana report. The surge in player count wasn’t just a one-week wonder either. The game pulled in 4 million players in its debut week and steadily climbed to 9 million in 3 months.
Oblivion Remastered was developed by Virtuos Games and rebuilt using Unreal Engine 5, offering significant visual upgrades, refined sound design, and a handful of gameplay tweaks while staying faithful to the original 2006 RPG. Critics and fans alike praised the remaster, with some outlets rating it as high as 4.5 out of 5. That said, the experience hasn’t been smooth across the board.
On PC, players have raised ongoing concerns about performance issues, particularly through Steam and the Xbox PC app. Recent user reviews have been mixed, citing frequent crashes, frame rate drops, and bugs.
Bethesda did roll out Patch 1.2 earlier this month to address several of these problems, focusing on improved performance, bug fixes, and expanded difficulty settings. However, according to many players, the update hasn't resolved the issues entirely, and the pace of updates has drawn criticism.
Complicating things further, Virtuos — the studio handling the remaster and also co-developing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater — recently laid off around 270 employees. That development has raised some concerns among fans regarding the future support and update schedule for Oblivion Remastered.
Still, the game’s strong numbers suggest there’s a dedicated audience ready to dive back into Cyrodiil, even if the road hasn’t been bump-free. For players eager to revisit the world of Tamriel, Xbox Series X|S remains the most stable platform, while PC players may want to hold off or consider using mods like the Unofficial Oblivion Remastered Patch to smooth out the experience.
