Fortnite’s new Sidekicks feature has arrived, but instead of excitement, it’s sparking backlash from players who are already calling for a boycott.

Epic Games introduced Sidekicks as part of the latest Fortnite update, giving players small companions that follow them around, react to the environment, and come with unique names and cosmetics. On paper, it sounds like a fun addition, adorable pets to tag along in battle royale matches. But the community isn’t celebrating. Instead, many players are frustrated with the pricing model and limited functionality, calling the feature a “scam.”
“Please do not buy Sidekicks,” one player wrote on social media, adding that “the greed on display is disgusting and should not be rewarded.” The main issue? Customization is locked. Once you pick a base style, it’s permanent. If you want to change it, you’ll need to buy the same Sidekick again. At a price point of $15–$20 (1,000–1,500 V-Bucks), many feel that’s unreasonable.
Some suggested that Epic could justify the cost if Sidekicks had useful in-game abilities, such as collecting dropped ammo, gold, or duplicate items. Right now, they’re purely cosmetic, which makes the steep price harder to swallow.
Interestingly, Epic has already circulated a survey asking players about Sidekicks’ pricing and features. That suggests the company may be testing the waters and could adjust the system if the backlash continues.
For now, here’s the full list of Sidekicks available at launch:
Peels (Nov 1, Simpsons Battle Pass) – 1,000 V-Bucks
Lil’ Raptor (Nov 7) – 1,200 V-Bucks
Spike (Nov 7) – 1,200 V-Bucks
Flopsticks (Nov 7) – 1,500 V-Bucks
Cuddle Team Jr. (Nov 7) – 1,500 V-Bucks
Bonsey (Nov 7, free with Bonsey Back Bling) – 1,200 V-Bucks
Doggo Jr. (Nov 7) – 1,500 V-Bucks
Whether Epic adjusts the pricing or adds more functionality remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: players are making their voices heard. If enough hold off on buying, Epic may have no choice but to rethink how Sidekicks work.
