Fortnite may soon welcome a new type of cosmetic, called “Companions,” to its battle royale mode, according to recent leaks.
Leaked images, discovered through recent Fortnite season update, show what appear to be user interface icons for these Companions. As per the datamined content shared online, fans spotted a golden retriever, two pugs, a robotic dog styled after the game’s well-known Cuddle Team Leader, and the quirky skateboard-toting turtle.
The concept of pets in Fortnite isn’t entirely new. Back in the earlier seasons, Epic Games introduced “Pets” — animated animals that functioned as backbling, meaning they were worn like backpacks. Over the years, players saw about a dozen different pets appear, from basic designs to more elaborate ones such as Choppy, a floating alien, and even licensed characters like Baby Yoda. However, in recent years, these pets have been absent, leaving some fans nostalgic for their return.
According to previous datamine findings, Epic Games has been planning this pet-like feature for a while. The new Companions are expected to be more interactive and immersive than their predecessors, with the ability to follow players around the map.
While details are still unconfirmed, it’s believed that these creatures will be visible to you and your squad, but not to enemies — meaning no one can target your adorable turtle buddy mid-match. Players can reportedly name, feed, and groom their Companions, adding a layer of personalization.
Epic Games has not officially confirmed Companions or their release date. If they do arrive soon, they would mark the first new cosmetic type in Fortnite since “Kicks” (customizable shoes) were introduced in November 2024.
