Gears of War: Reloaded has crossed an early milestone, reaching over 1 million players within just 3 days of its release.
The news was confirmed by the official Gears of War account on X (formerly Twitter) on August 29, which thanked fans with a playful message: “Ending the console war, one grub at a time. Thank you for 1 million players.”
Gears of War: Reloaded launched on August 26 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (via Steam and Xbox app), and — for the first time in series history — PlayStation 5.
However, this milestone doesn’t directly translate to 1 million copies sold. As an Xbox first-party release, the game is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, expanding its reach significantly. Players who previously purchased the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition also received a free upgrade, which further boosted the numbers.
General sentiments are mixed to positive. Gears of War: Reloaded is being celebrated for its technical fidelity, like 4K resolution, 120FPS multiplayer, Dolby Atmos support, and accessibility to new audiences, especially on PS5. However, critics agree it’s more of a preservation effort than a bold reimagining. If you’ve never played the original, this is your best entry point. If you have? It depends on how much nostalgia you’re willing to pay for. Here are some top reviews:
Pure Xbox: 9/10 — “A great reintroduction to one of Xbox’s most famous franchises”
COGConnected: 8.5/10 — “Solid remaster that scratches a nostalgic itch”
CBR: 8/10 — “Definitive way to play the first Gears of War”
Dexerto: 8/10 — “Definitive version of one of the best shooters ever made”
PCGamesN: 6/10 — “More technologically advanced visuals sap away the earlier versions' grimy cartoon charm.”
Checkpoint Gaming: 6.5/10 — “Dated and timeless, clunky and exhilarating, simple and unforgettable.”
Looking ahead, the franchise has big plans. Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel set during the catastrophic Emergence Day, is scheduled for release in 2026 on Xbox and PC, with strong speculation that PlayStation 5 will also be included. Many fans are also hopeful that Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 could receive the “Reloaded” treatment in the coming years, as these titles have never been brought to PC.
Outside of gaming, the Gears universe is expanding into Hollywood. Netflix is currently developing a Gears of War movie, with director David Leitch (Bullet Train, The Fall Guy) attached and Jon Spaihts (Dune, Prometheus) working on the script.
