It’s no secret that GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious open-world games ever, but that level of detail might come at a cost—specifically, the frame rate. A former Rockstar Games developer has stirred the pot by suggesting that GTA 6 could be running at 30 frames per second (FPS) on base consoles, all in favor of jaw-dropping visuals.

Obbe Vermeij, who worked on classics like GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA IV, shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). According to him, Rockstar may be prioritizing graphics over higher frame rates, calling it a necessary “trade-off.”

He explained that running a game at 30 FPS allows developers to render significantly more polygons compared to 60 FPS, which in turn helps deliver richer environments and more lifelike character models.

Vermeij also noted that for a fast-paced, competitive action game, high frame rates are essential. But for a slow-burn sandbox like GTA 6, many players might actually prefer the extra visual detail—even if it means giving up that buttery 60 FPS.

Previously, Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter has also speculated that the PS5 Pro might struggle to hit a consistent 60 FPS with GTA 6, adding fuel to the ongoing debate.

Again, nothing’s been officially confirmed by Rockstar yet, so take it with a grain of salt—but the signs are pointing that way.

Right now, GTA 6 is only confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no PC version in sight.

Vermeij might’ve settled for 30, but what about you? Drop your hot take in the comments.
